The Society annually offers the Sir John Barbirolli Memorial Foundation, award which provides financial assistance to musicians to purchase better instruments.

The award is open to students at music conservatoires. Priority is given to first year students and junior students who will shortly be embarking on full time study.

The Emily Anderson Prize was established under the will of Emily Anderson, editor and translator of the letters of Mozart and Beethoven, as an international competition for violinists.

Detailed nominations must be made by conservatory principals. The student's professor, Head of Department, and Principal should submit recommendations confirming that they support the purchase of the instrument described at the price quoted. Applicants sh ould also present details of any other funding available for the purchase of this instrument and a brief statement saying why they need to purchase a better instrument. Requests should include the date at which the student began enrollment, as well as det ails of previous study, examinations passed, and any other information concerning current level of achievement.
