Program
The Sphinx Competition is held every year in Ann Arbor and Detroit, Michigan to encourage, develop, and recognize classical music talent in the Black and Latino communities. The next competition is February 2011. Instrumental categor ies are Violin, Viola, Cello, and Double Bass. Senior Division winners will receive cash prizes ranging from $3,500 to $10,000; a Sphinx Music Assistance Fund scholarship which they can apply towards their musical development; an opportunity to perform wi th the Sphinx Symphony; and a full scholarship to attend one of Sphinx Music's Summer Music or Artistic Sponsor Institutions (which include Aspen, BU Tangelwood, Chautauqua, the Youth Orchestra of the Americas. Incoming first year students may be eligible for scholarships in partner institutions, including the Juilliard School, University of Michigan, Manhattan School of Music, and Indiana University Music School.
Eligibility
The competition is open to all Junior High, High School, and College age Black and Latino string players residing in the U.S. Participants in the Junior division must not have reached their 18th birthday by February 5, 2011. Participants in the Senior Division must be at least 18 years old but not have reached their 27th birthday by February 5, 2011.
